Andy 2007 - The Soundtrack

Right in the middle of an incredible scene, just as the climax in the theatrical masterpiece is about to take place you hear it. Softly playing in the background, the most perfectly timed and pure genius of the right musics to just make the scene for forever.
One of my favorite point-on perfect song selections is in Love Actually, a movie that has just about made its way permanently into Annie and my all time favorites list. In this scene, Mark has just been found out by Juliette, she now a knows his secret. He doesn't hate her for marrying his best friend Peter, he is in love with her. Their interaction ends awkwardly, and the audience might have been left wondering how the soft spoken Mark was actually feeling had it not been for the perfectly timed Dido song "Here with Me." ( Watch it here ) Did you notice that everything was perfect, even down to the definiteness of zipping his zipper. Amazing.
Sometimes I have been in the car with someone else and asked what mix we were listening to, only to come to find out it was the soundtrack for a movie. Sometimes you can learn a lot about a movie by listening to the soundtrack. Carefully chosen music evokes the emotions off screen that the actors can convey on screen.
With that in mind, I would like to share with you the soundtrack to my 2007.

Andy Ellwood 2007 - The Soundtrack

Song: Number One Artist: Nelly
At the beginning of this year, I was number one. Or at least I thought so. At the beginning of the year I was in a comfortable place professionally where people patted my back and told me that I was really cool. I was a little bit more than confident, I was cocky. "I am number one. Two is not a winner and three nobody remembers"

Song: Open Up Your Eyes Artist: Jeremy Camp
But as I got back from my adventure in Great Brittan with Katie, things looked different. The things that were set and were the givens in my life looked different.
"And the time has come to realize And see the plan you've been designed for So face the fear of all unknown And see the heart inside So open up your eyes."

Song: The Rising Artist: Bruce Springsteen
Annie introduced this song to me and it has quickly become one of the most listened to songs on my iTunes. This song would be the musically back drop for my 2007 montage of my day dream and journaling sessions at Starbucks through out the spring and summer pondering the question "Is this the adventure I am ready to settle in on?"
"Come on up for the Rising, come one and lay your hand in mine."

Song: When Your Minds Made Up Artist: Glen Hassard (Once)
I knew that I was going to leave Northwestern by late spring, but it took a little longer than that to make the decision to actually do it. I didn't know what I wanted to do next, but I knew that that it was not the career for me in the long run. Around the same time, I went and saw the movie Once (and blogged about it.) and the music haunted me in the most amazing way. Especially this song. Even when I tried to talk myself out of leaving the comfort zone, my mind was made up. "When your mind's made up, There's no point trying to change it."

Song: All the things that I've Done Artist: The Killers
Michael Fitzsimmons had this song in his "roadtrip mix" on our College Station trip this fall and it has been coursing through my airwaves since. Just greatness. "I got soul, but I'm not a soldier"

Song: Le Nozze di Figaro: Act III, Scene 10, Duettino, "Sull'aria" Artist: Hungarian State Opera Orchestra, Maria Pia Ionata, Patrizia Pace & Pier Giorgio Morandi
In the midst of the debacle that was my time with RunPolitics this fall, I was watching the Shawshank Redemption. In the middle of the movie there is a scene where the main character,Andy Dufresne, turns on the PA system and plays a record of Mozart's Opera "Marriage of Figaro"and for the entire prison. Narrating, Red says "I have no idea to this day what those two Italian ladies were singing about. Truth is, I don't want to know. Some things are best left unsaid. I'd like to think they were singing about something so beautiful, it can't be expressed in words, and makes your heart ache because of it. I tell you, those voices soared higher and farther than anybody in a gray place dares to dream. It was like some beautiful bird flapped into our drab little cage and made those walls dissolve away, and for the briefest of moments, every last man in Shawshank felt free." At that started my affinity for opera. I didn't finish the movie that night, I just downloaded the entire "Marriage of Figaro" by Mozart.

Song: Carry On My Wayward Son Artist: Kansas
Reintroduced to this song by the miracle experience that is Guitar Hero, it was a timely song for the transitions that I was making. In the screen play of this year, it wouldn't have been played all the way through, but would have been the back drop for my travels of this fall. "Masquerading as a man with a reason My charade is the event of the season And if I claim to be a wise man, well It surely means that I don't know."

Song: Don't Stop Believing Artist: Journey
I left the things that had been comfortable for the chance to grow and make some head way toward bigger things. I struck out and end up leaving the that company when they ran out of money. I took a chance and it didn't work out and that is where most people go back to what is comfortable and what they know. I know of a lot of people that took their chance at greatness and then after getting knock down once, went back to comfort. Not me, not this time. "Don't stop believing, hold onto that feeling."

Song: Here I Go Again Artist: Whitesnake
I made the move to One Key. I am in with a terrific group of professionals that have taken a great concept and positioned themselves for an amazing company. They have made their way from a start up to a fast growing early stage company with the sky as the limit. I feel incredibly fortunate to have come on board as the fourth member of the national sales team and be in charge of Texas and the Midwest. "An here I go again on my own Goin down the only road Ive ever known, Like a drifter I was born to walk alone. 'Cause I know what it means To walk along the lonely street of dreams"

Song: Lose Yourself Artist: Eminem
As the year of 2007 is coming to a close, I am posed with the question by one of the great poets of out time, "Look, if you had one shot, or one opportunity to seize everything you ever wanted, One moment, Would you capture it or just let it slip?" And so that is where the year is ending for me. I am poised to answer that question in 2008, to make my move and create something from nothing and bring a new light to shades of gray this past year has brought. Now imagine the closing scene of this year is me walking away from the camera with a determination in my step that inspires the audience to know that when the credits begin that my character made it happen. "Success is my only (radio edit) option, failure's not. So here I go is my shot. Feet fail me not this may be the only opportunity that I got."

Song: Lot's of Leavin' Left to Do Artist: Dierks Bentley
Queue the credits, roll the outtakes, debate what the sequel will be like. As we wrap up my year set to music I want to leave you with my theme song for the year and the song that summarizes a lot of what has been running through my head and through my life over the past 365 days. "These old boots still got a lot of ground they ain’t covered yet... and if you think I’m gonnna settle down I‘ve got news for you I still got a lot of leavin’ left to do."

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
